Choosing a Theme

Planning your wedding around a theme helps the bride organize their wedding, having a general theme will help her in making the hundreds of decisions she will have to take during the planning of her wedding. For example if your theme is “Love”, every thing must be on a romantic note - the bridal gown, the reception venue, the cake, the bouquet and the favors. When you choose the theme for your wedding, brainstorm for wedding theme ideas that fit your personality and style! Having a theme that is unique and personal can actually make your wedding wedding planning easier and will probably make an impression on your guests, because it’s something that will make your wedding day memorable. As a starting point for choosing the theme sit down with your fiancé and write down your basic likes and dislikes, your job, your hobbies and so on. For example if both like the sea and diving how about a "Sea" theme?  If the bride collects angels' figurines, perhaps you can go for an "Angels" theme and use some elements of her collection in the decoration.

Another common starting point are the invitations, you can base your wedding around them. For example, if you have already chosen invitations full of flowers and both of you like them, why not go with a "Nature” or “Spring” theme . Other things you can use as inspiration are the reception venue and the bridal gown.

Yet another starting point for your theme brainstorming is the season: Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter, as well as Christmas or Easter are very popular themes.

Finally, another great way of choosing your wedding theme might be to personalize ideas from other weddings you've been to or from the following list:

  • Love
  • The bride and groom
  • Sea / Boats / Beach / Islands
  • Travel / Countries / Cities
  • Medieval Age
  • Chocolate / Sugar
  • Nature / Country / Flowers / Animals/ Butterflies
  • Sports
  • Movies / Movie Stars / Hollywood Divas
  • Books  / Famous Writers
  • Painting / Famous Painters
  • Music / Musical Instruments / Classical Composers / Jazz / Pop Stars
  • Gems
  • Gods and goddesses

You can look in our wedding decoration gallery (http://www.ideas-for-a-wedding.com/en/ideas/decoration/ ) for photos that can show you how some themes might result in decoration your wedding.

When you chose the theme you must think about the colours that you want to use, because they will be used everywere, namely on the flowers, the table cloths in the reception, the cake, the bridal gown details and so on. When choosing your colors:

  • Chose colors related with the theme (for example red or pink for a Love theme, blue for a Nautical theme).
  • You shouldn’t go too strong with only one color, especially if it’s a strong colour. For example if you chose red, try not to over use it, you can use touches of red and use other colors to complement it.

If you feel the colors chosen are important enough for you, you can even go with a color-based theme, for instance a “Red” theme or “Rainbow” theme. A color can easily be used in all aspects of your wedding as you can see in this example of an "Ivory wedding".

A different way of conveying the theme you choose is with textures. For example if your wedding is medieval, it will be interesting to use silks and brocades. For a Nautical wedding, you could use cotton fabrics, fishing nets and rods.

An important thing is that both the bride and the groom are commited to the theme chosen.  After all the theme is going to be all over your wedding and therefore it is important it is something you both agree upon.
